Propane & the Environment

What to know about the effect of propane on the ecosystem

Our customers — and folks throughout Central Florida — want to choose home energy that is efficient, effective and safe for the planet. Propane definitely fits the bill. Propane has long been recognized as green energy. It’s an approved alternative fuel listed in both the Clean Air Act of 1990 and the National Energy Policy Act of 1992.

Using propane to heat spaces and water, cook food, dry clothing and power outdoor amenities allows homeowners to slash emissions and protect the environment.

Why propane is green

Propane is an eco-friendly energy option for several reasons.

• No additional drilling required: Propane is a co-product of natural gas extraction and oil refining, meaning no extra drilling is needed to produce it.
• Low carbon intensity: Propane has a substantially lower carbon intensity (CI) score than diesel, heating oil or gasoline. Its score is also about 40% lower than that of Florida’s grid electricity.
• No methane emissions: Unlike other fuels, propane contains no methane, a highly potent greenhouse gas.
• Minimal particulate emissions: Propane emits virtually no particulate matter, which is a known carcinogen.
• Nontoxic and water-safe: Propane is nontoxic and insoluble in water. Since it’s released as a gas, it doesn’t spill, pool or leave residue behind.

You can add to these eco-friendly benefits the fact that today’s propane-powered home equipment is exceptionally efficient. Propane water heaters typically heat water much faster than electric models. Propane dryers have shorter cycles and leave fewer wrinkles. Propane heating equipment can boast fuel efficiency ratings as high as 98.5%.

The result: lower energy spending and fewer emissions. That’s called a win-win!
